WHAT WE DO - Education - The Groundwater
Adventures of Walter Wet
The
Ground Water Adventures of Walter Wet© is
twelve minute video, focused on
ground
water protection and preservation at the local
(municipal) level. The video discusses basic
hydrology, aquifers, wells, pollution sources and
well head protection. A variety of educational
pamphlets can be used along with this video and are
available through the
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
(NJ DEP) and
United States Environmental Protection Agency
(US EPA).
The following are definitions of key topics discussed in the video:
·
Hydrologic Cycle - The circulation of water above, on and below the earth's surface
·
Aquifer - A
formation, group of formations, or part of a
formation that contains sufficient saturated
permeable material to yield economical quantities of
water to wells. The water in an aquifer is also
called ground water
·
Pollution Sources come from two types, point and non-point
Point source of pollution occur at specific
locations, such as leaking underground storage,
tanks, waste water discharges and spills.
Non-point sources of pollution originate from
dispersed sources such as roadway runoff and
fertilizers and pesticides.
·
Well Head Protection - A national program that intends to minimize the risk of ground water
contamination for water supply wells.
·
Well Head Protection Area - An area of land surrounding a well from which a water
borne contaminant may percolate through the ground
to a well.
