SUMMER INTERNSHIPS
The Passaic River Coalition (PRC) needs three or four
interns this summer for 10 weeks.
1. The first intern will work with the PRC-led
regional Ground Water Protection Committee to research road salt issues,
including its scientific impacts; the availability, performance, impacts,
and economics of alternatives; and produce a Guide for local communities.
A geology, environmental science, or geography major
would be best, although other majors will be considered. The candidate
would also have to be comfortable with non-scientific factors
2. A second intern will work on plans for buying
and preserving open space with the Land Trust Director; including selecting
land to buy; and preparing several Preliminary Environmental Assessments of
properties, a few applications to counties for open space funding, a couple
of applications for property tax exemptions, processing some deed
recordings.
An environmental major is acceptable. An environmental
minor linked to any major will be considered.
3. A third intern will do G.I.S. work for a
range of projects, including supporting the development of an Open Space
Master Plan for a town. A G.I.S. major, or a major who has facilitated the
attainment of significant G.I.S. skills, is essential.
4. A fourth intern will probably be involved
with stewardship and restoration work on one to three properties owned or
being pursued by PRC. This may involve wetlands restoration, bat habitat
protection, and detailed identification of species. There also may be a
significant assignment to lead and manage the creation of a new trail.
An ecology or biology major is required.
###.
In practice, there likely will be an intermingling of
assignments, so flexibility and versatility in your approach to work
assignments is desirable.
For instance, there will be some attendance at meetings
and forums and writing of summaries. There will some visits to PRC-owned
properties to post signs. One intern may update the land trust data base.
There could be a need to help write articles and
educational documents, organize workshops at our Willow Hall headquarters,
set up a “Friends of Willow Hall” group, establish a garden.
Other Qualifications
All interns should have a strong environmental
sensitivity.
The land trust intern should be comfortable with both
some physically taxing activity, such as hiking in forests of varying
slopes; as well as operating in a range of geographic areas from rural to
urban; as well as report preparation.
Moderate computer skills are also important,
except for the G.I.S. position where it must be more than moderate.
Students should be at least juniors, although
it is possible a sophomore could be considered. A recent graduate or a
current Masters’ student could be acceptable, too.
You must have access to a car for field visits,
although none of the interns will be in the field each day. Please do not respond unless you are sure you will be
able to live in the general area for this time period.
Compensation
The pay is $2500 for the 10-week period,
beginning June 1. However, it is preferable that the land trust intern (see
above) starts in late April or early May, if at all possible.
Application Process
Please send a
letter expressing which position(s) you are interested in, and a resume to
Matt Polsky,
mattpolsky@passaicriver.org.
