Over three million people in northern New
Jersey use the surface and ground water of the
Passaic River Basin
for drinking water. If you live
in or near the 935 square miles of the Passaic River
Basin, YOU are one of them!
Water of the Passaic River Basin, however, has to deal with
many challenges. The main two are:
 |
Diminishing drinking water resources due to
ongoing development and high demand for
water (in the Highlands portion of the
watershed, which is the biggest water
resource for the Basin, there is deficit
about 46 millions gallons of water per day). |
 |
Dirtiness of water due to old pollution
caused by industrialism that was not fully
taken out and today pollution caused by
widespread residential use. |
What happens if we
do not deal with these challenges?
 |
We will have less drinking water (especially
groundwater), and people who depend on their
wells will have no water and will be forced
to move out |
 |
There will be higher cost of living for
people who stay in water depleting watershed |
 |
Loss of business |
 |
Loss of further development |
 |
Loss of population |
 |
Loss of jobs |
 |
Loss of tourism |
 |
Loss of real estate value |
