Recognizing the need to preserve sensitive ecosystems and fragile resources for protection of water resources within the Passaic River Watershed, the Passaic River Coalition’s Board of Trustees established a Land Trust to acquire and preserve open space. The Passaic River Coalition Land Trust provides a mechanism to implement the PRC’s mission of land and water resource management by permanently protecting and preserving land.
The Land Trust began with the donation of a substantial financial gift in 1993 to create an endowment to provide funds for land acquisition. Today, Passaic River Coalition’s Land Trust has acquired over 1000 acres of varied character in the Passaic River Watershed and is actively seeking new and additional lands to set aside, forever preserved against development or degradation.
The Passaic River Coalition Land Trust works with citizens, governments, and businesses to develop solutions to protect the environment within the watershed through land preservation. The Land Trust not only preserves land; we also provide guidance to local government in the efforts to identify and plan for protection of vital natural resource and develop a methodology to acquire and manage open space.
With funding from our endowment, NJDEP Green Acres Trust matching funds, county and municipal open space trust funds, foundation support, and private donations, we create partnerships to acquire property that benefits everyone.
The Passaic River Coalition Land participates also in landscape design of our properties, parks and open space. We do:
- Riverside Conservation
- Riverfront Parks
- Trails Construction
- Urban Parks Recreation
So far, we have acquired 34 properties in 6 counties (Passaic, Morris, Bergen, Essex, Sussex, and Somerset), 20 municipalities, and a total of 1052.29 acres.
The Passaic River Coalition Land Trust welcomes tax-deductible contributions of land and funds.
